Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) is a neuropeptide with multiple physiological roles. It works by binding to specific receptors on cell membranes, initiating a cascade of intracellular events that lead to smooth muscle relaxation, dilation of blood vessels, and increased secretion of water and electrolytes in the intestines. Early work on VIP focused on its potent vasodilatory effects and its presence in the gastrointestinal tract. Notably, VIP is also involved in immune modulation within the respiratory system. Today, it is primarily studied for its effects on:
- Pulmonary arterial hypertension
- Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Digestive system disorders
- Neuroprotection and brain function
It is also being studied for potential roles in inflammation and immune response modulation.
